Sunday July 29, 2007

Well, I've been planning this trip for almost 6 months and today is the day to leave home and begin my road trip. I am going to visit a couple of areas that I've visited before including Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Livingston, Montana, including Yellowstone Park and Grand Teton National Park. I'm also going to visit a number of new places, mostly places that I've seen on Fly Fishing TV shows. These places include Swan Valley Idaho, Bozeman Montana, Missoula Montana and Fernie British Columbia. I didn't plan anything after British Columbia just in case I want to visit somwhere else or return to one of places I've already visited. I should be back in 5 weeks.

Spent the first night at a cute little boutique hotel called the Siena Hotel, Spa and Casino located on the banks of the Truckee River just a short walk from downtown Reno. Had dinner at a wonderful new restaurant called Wind River, just a block from the hotel, also on the banks of the Truckee River.

Monday brought a long drive through the Nevada desert, passing through such exciting towns as Fernley, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain and planning to spend the night in Elko. Experienced record high temperatures in western Nevada and massive thunderstorms in Eastern Nevada. Today was a good day to get to know my "cruise control" and 6th gear.

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Continued my drive through the Nevada desert today. Drove from Elko to Wells and then left I-80 to go north into Idaho. Not much to see again !!

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

I finally left Nevada and entered Idaho. The scenery is improving a bit and got even better as I drove through Twin Falls and finally arrived in Idaho Falls. I've passed over the Snake River a couple times and even saw the spot where Evil Knievel jumped his motorcycle over the canyon. I'm staying here in Idaho Falls for the next four nights as I venture down to Swan Valley, Idaho and fish the South Fork of the Snake River on Thursday and Friday. It's been a long three days of driving and I need some rest.

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

Today was a rest day, so I drove into Swan Valley, Idaho to check in at South Fork Outfitters. I am going fishing with them on Thursday and Friday. They are located on the bank of the South Fork of the Snake River at the southern end of the Teton Mountain range.

South Fork Outfitters in Swan Valley. Idaho. Not Sun Valley, Swan Valley is a little smaller with a population of 213 and the nearest town is 53 miles away.

Thursday, August 2, 2007

Today was my first day to fish. I floated the South Fork of the Snake River in Swan Valley, Idaho with Stacey from South Fork Outfitters. We had a great day, the weather was a little cooler today with some late afternoon thundershowers. I caught between 15 and 20 trout, mostly brown trout but also a couple of cutthroat. The largest being 20 inches long. We also saw a mink running along the bank less than 20 feet from us. Wow, it would sure take a lot of mink to make a coat.

Thursday, August 2, 2007

We also saw a golden eagle up close.

Thursday, August 2, 2007

And a bald eagle.

Here I am proudly holding the 20 inch long brown trout moments before I released him back into the river.

The boat being lanched for another day of fishing.

Friday, August 3, 2007

Another great day fishing with Stacey from South Fork Outfitters. Today we fished the Upper Canyon section of the South Fork of the Snake River. We had a great day today, it was a little warmer today and the thunderstorms they were predicting for today never arrived. The Upper Canyon section was much different terrain that the lower section we fished yesterday. We saw a bald eagle, a red-tailed hawk and a couple of goshawks that did some amazing aerial acrobatics along the cliffs of the canyon.

Friday, August 3, 2007

Caught about 15 nice fish today, and also lost that many or more. Today I caught mostly cutthroat trout.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

I left Idaho Falls this morning and am driving through Swan Valley, Victor Idaho and on to Jackson Hole. As I left Idaho Falls I noticed this sign. What do you think they are trying to tell the tourists?

Saturday, August 4, 2007

I drove up over the Teton Pass and dropped into "The Hole", (Jackson Hole). It's a little hazy today. Looks like some afternoon thunderstorms are moving in.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

I wandered around Jackson looking at some of my favorite places. This is taken from Spring Creek Resort and is the best view of the Grand Teton in all the valley, except from the river. Looks like there are still a few spots of snow on the Grand Teton.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

This sign signifies the essence of Jackson Hole.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

The famous archway in the center of town. A lot of Elk shed their antlers to make this arch. Less than a mile from the center of town is the National Elk Reserve where tens of thousands of elk come every winter to be fed and be safe from hunters.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

The stage coach in the center of town. It get's robbed every night at 6:00. I'm going to have to attend the stage coach robbery this week.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

There are two ski areas in Jackson. These are the slopes that are about 5 blocks from the center of town.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

This is the other ski area, Teton Village, about 8 miles outside of Jackson Hole. I am staying in this neighborhood.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

This is a really nice condo that I'll be calling home for the next week.

Saturday, August 4, 2007

There is a very nice walking and cycling trail near my condo and I thought about going for a walk. I read on the news that a mother bear and her cubs had harassed people on the trail so I decided I needed some bear spray before I went for a walk alone.

On to week 2
